2016 Buena Vista Pinot Noir Otelia’s Selection – California

$50.00

Coming from Sonoma’s oldest winery, Buena Vista was founded in 1857 and the original winery is now a California Historic Landmark operating under the re-born vision of Jean-Charles Boisset.

This Pinot presents exceptional clarity with a plum color filling the glass. The nose presents Raspberry, chocolate-covered cherries and mineral. This is a full-bodied wine that has a deliciously long finish with notes of black olives and black currant. I am glad we have another bottle as I think this vintage will be peaking if cellared for an additional two-three years.

Throwing this out there now, I am a big Pino fan and for those who know me, saying Pino implies Noir without question (Yes, yes, I like those Gris grapes too!). So, for me, the opportunity to review this wine was exciting for several reasons:

  • As just mentioned, I love Pino Noirs…
  • We personally bought this wine at the landmark Buena Vista winery in Sonoma
  • I am impatient by nature and it has been stored in one of our cellars since our trip

From a visual perspective, this wine, when poured, appeared clear with a crushed garnet hue, similar to brandy. There was no sediment noted. The scents coming through were light, pleasant and delicate with mild graphite dominating the nose. The legs were thin and fast, not heavy or jammy in any way.

With the first sip, the body of this wine was a medium sweet with bursts of fig, black currant and raspberry. I was pleasantly surprised how bold this wine came through on the palate after initially noting the visual and aromatic qualities to be lighter and calmer. This bold flavor lasted throughout the sip, continuing into the lingering finish. I enjoyed every sip of this bottle and look forward to enjoying the next bottle, still remaining in our cellar.
